Gynecomastia
Male Breast Reduction Specialist California
Boost your confidence to go shirt-less again.
Breast surgery is a largely female-dominated experience. However, in recent years, an increasing number of men are inquiring about the possibility of male breast reduction surgery to transform the appearance of their chest, and increase their confidence and self-esteem.
Why might a man need male breast reduction surgery?
Both men and women are born with breast tissue. As women get older, their breast tissue begins to develop. This normally happens when they reach puberty. Some men may find their breast tissue also developing. When men develop excess breast tissue, it is known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is a relatively common condition. However, it can cause significantly negative psychological effects including anxiety, embarrassment, and loss of self-esteem.
Some men feel that excess breast tissue compromises their masculinity. As a result, many sufferers of gynecomastia find themselves avoiding situations where they may need to be bare-chested.

Why does excess breast tissue occur in men?
No one knows exactly why some men develop excess breast tissue. In many cases, fluctuating hormone levels during puberty can cause breast tissue to remain enlarged. Aging has also been attributed to excess male breast tissue. This is because when testosterone levels begin to decline, collagen production slows, saggy skin and increased weight. Each of these factors can contribute towards the appearance of enlarged breast tissue.
Some prescription medications have been linked to gynecomastia, including those used to treat heartburn, stomach ulcers, fungal infections and high blood pressure. If your excess breast tissue is a result of a medication you are taking, you should speak to your doctor to see what alternatives may be available.

Types of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Depending on your specific needs and goals, Dr. Lesavoy will recommend the type of gynecomastia procedure to help you achieve those goals to help you feel confident again. There are different surgical techniques to reduce excess breast tissue and skin:
- Liposuction of the Breast – For some men, breast liposuction may be all that is needed to help reduce size and remove excess fat tissue that is causing the gynecomastia.
- Breast Skin Excision – Some men may experience excess breast skin due to weight loss or other hereditary condition causing the man boob appearance. In this situation, breast lift procedure to remove the excess skin and restore nipple position may be necessary to achieve the desired look. Incisions for this procedure may vary depending on the severity of the condition and can be as little as only around the nipple or more incisions may be necessary to properly tighten the skin for a smooth and contoured appearance.
- Tissue and Excess Skin Removal – In more severe cases, removal of the glandular tissue causing the gynecomastia may be indicated. Removal of this excess tissue is through discreet incisions around the nipple followed by a tightening up of the excess skin using the same incisions. In more extreme cases, more incisions may be necessary to achieve the desired look.
