Labiaplasty

WHAT IS LABIAPLASTY?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery that addresses the appearance of the labia minora – the flaps of skin either side of the vaginal opening.

The size and shape of the labia can vary quite significantly from woman to woman. Those women who have particularly large labia may find that it causes them discomfort or embarrassment, and so they turn to labiaplasty to make aesthetic improvements to them.

Medical and aesthetic benefits to the labia minora
The labia minora or lips of the vulva are the tissue located on each side of the vaginal opening from the clitoral hood to the perineum. They can be present in various shapes and sizes. These include normal small strands to larger sizes that are sometimes referred to as “elephant ears”.

The varying sizes of the labia minora are normal and do not indicate any health issues. Even within this range, numerous patients are far from being comfortable with the size and appearance of their labia.

A labiaplasty consultation for potential revision of the size of their labia. They seek medical and aesthetic benefits.

The medical benefits of labiaplasty or labia reduction include treating discomfort or irritation with tight pants, sports, cycling, or other physical activities. Women with a large labia may have been born with it or have developed through childbirth or aging.

Labia minora hypertrophy is variable but has been defined as labia with a longitudinal length longer than 4cm.11,12 Ideally the labia should protrude slightly past the introitus at about 1cm.

In practice, there are wide variations in female genital anatomy and what is normal should be defined by the patient (Figure 1)

Traditionally labia minora reductions have been performed by trimming the labial edge and then oversewing the cut edge.

The aesthetic benefits of labiaplasty include improvements to self-consciousness and self-esteem and helping patients achieve a better look.

Labiaplasty Anasthesia
Labiaplasty surgery is most often carried out under a general anesthetic. However, it can also be performed using a local anesthetic and heavy sedation.
The procedure itself involves cutting away excess tissue from the labia to makes the labia shorter, neater and firmer. The incisions are then closed using sutures, which will dissolve within a week of your surgery.
Labiaplasty Recovery
Most patients can return home the same day as their surgery, but should expect to take off from work for at least a few days to give your body time to recover. However, it can take several months for the skin to be fully healed.

You may be in some discomfort immediately after your surgery, and Dr. Lesavoy will prescribe you pain relief to help minimize this.

Swelling and bruising is also normal and will fade after a few weeks. Dr. Lesavoy will also provide you with other specific aftercare advice including: keeping the area clean to minimize the risk of infection, wearing loose underwear and clothing to prevent rubbing, and using sanitary towels instead of tampons, as well as avoiding sex for at least two weeks.

YOUR NEW LOOK
While Labiaplasty surgery might enhance your appearance and self-confidence, it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your imagination. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them frankly with your Dr. Lesavoy.

The results of the procedure are significant and permanent. If your expectations are realistic, chances are good that you’ll be very satisfied with your new look.
